A breast self-exam takes only a few minutes. Checking regularly helps you get to know your body and notice any changes.

  • 1. Look in the mirror With your arms at your sides and then raised above your head, look for any change in the shape, size or skin of your breasts.
  • 2. Check standing up Using your fingertips in small circles, go over the whole breast up to the armpit with light, medium and firm pressure.
  • 3. Repeat lying down Lie on your back with one arm under your head; repeat the same circular movements with your other hand, then switch sides.
  • 4. What to look for A lump or hardening, dimpling or an orange-peel look on the skin, a nipple turning inward or discharge, redness, and swelling in the armpit.
  • 5. Make it regular Do a self-exam every month, ideally a few days after your period ends. Keep up with regular doctor visits and the screenings recommended for your age.
